Written around 1350 by an anonymous author, this is a simple yet profound book about life in God as it translates into life in the world. This translation was based on Luther’s German edition of 1518.

Christ led His life not from expectation of reward but from love. And love makes life light, not heavy, so that it is joyfully led and willingly endured.160 But he who does not lead his life from love but fancies it should bring reward, for him the eternal life turns so heavy that he wishes to be promptly rid of it. It is a sign of a hireling that he wishes his work would soon end. But a true lover of life in Christ does not take offense at life’s work, length, or suffering. Hence it is written:
